That is very interesting! I have a few thoughts about it. I doubt that it would have been a fashion item. It may have been meant to go underneath some kind of fashionable hat. Or, perhaps it was a night cap, for warmth only. Another thought is whether it might have been a swimming cap, for long-distance swimmers, not for fashion!

Thank you- you have raised some very interesting points. It could easily have been a night cap as we so easily forget that there was no central heating then and the nights were so very cold.We have seen ear laps and chin guards to go under military helmets so it could be an underhat too- we also wondered whether it was for amateur dramatics?- perhaps Joan of Arc was a popular play or tableau at the time?
