Vintage 1920s,1930s fair isle jumper patterns pdf

Today we have digitalised these very pretty little fair isle design jumpers which date from the late 1920s, early 1930s. There are 2 designs with fair isle patterned bands and fair isle design collars with a 2 button neck detail. They are made with the usual yarn for fair isle at the time, which was a 2 ply shetland wool, and old size 8 and 10 needles- we give you the modern equivalent charts for needles in the pattern.

These have such pretty details such as a moss stitch waistband and collar band trim. Today they could be made in really soft merino or cashmere yarns and gorgeous colour schemes to make quite upmarket jumpers.

As you see, if you are looking for a period late 1920s, early 1930s look for a little girl for a TV drama or film then these will give you that look instantly. (add in the lovely bob hairstyle too though!)

They will fit aged around 8 and measure 28 and 26 around the chest, just to give you an idea of size. Of course, this will depend on your tension and if you decide to use a thicker yarn for a bigger size too- they would look lovely on grown ups too. You could even make them simpler by not shaping at the sleeves and having a more modern drop sleeve shoulder if you are more comfortable with sewing in straight sleeves .

We can imagine these in all sorts of really pretty pastel colours- pinks, lilacs, primrose, bluebell, soft turquioises - or with lots of leftover or odds and ends of yarn....the backgrounds could be pastel too, or the more normal grey, black , faun cream.....

Made in modern yarns they would be great today- make them in colours to match your new autumn wardrobe....

Vintage 1930s knitting patterns for elegant hats

The 1930s was an interesting time for fashion and that decade produced some lovely hat patterns. The 1920s flapper time had been and gone, and the austerity of the 1940s was not yet apparent. Having said that, the early 1930s were of course the time of the great depression when many people were destitute and had no money at all, and of course at that time there was no welfare state to help the needy.

The 1930s were, we think here at Vintage Visage, the decade when knitting and crochet as a home hobby really took off. The 1920s did have commercial knitting patterns, but in the 1930s there were many more publications such as magazines, and leaflets from yarn companies, which encouraged the housewife to make items for the family. It might sound sexist to say it was the females who knitted, but in truth that was who the home yarn craft market was aimed at, as it was assumed that the males went out to work and the females stayed at home and ran the household.

The 1930s fashions had become long, lean and elegant at the beginning of the decade, and these particular hat patterns that we have sourced- which are quite rare- date from the early 1930s. The hat patterns are very elegant and delicate- sitting very softly on the top of the head and were designed to go with the long lean jackets and dresses that were popular at the time.

Today we can make them for contemporary use as well as period dramas and reenactments of the 1930s. Imagine these made in the beautiful modern yarns of today- silks, cashmeres mohairs etc.....they would look great with modern fashion such as linens and jeans. Hats make good gifts and also sell well.

This one is an easy make- mainly knit 1 purl 1 rib- very much the ancestor of the modern beanie hat....

This one has a very lovely texture knit stitch- and is knitted on 2 needles with 3 ply yarn

More Vintage mens swimming costumes, trunks, knitting patterns

We have found 2 more wonderful 1930s mens  'onesies' one piece knitted swimming costume knitting patterns.....these patterns when knitted up make such fabulous outifts for period dramas and are also a real talking point if worn on the beach today! As with hte last ones we posted, just a word of warning to the uninitiated with knitted bathing costumes- when knitted wool gets wet, it absorbs water and so gets heavier.....and so the costume can droop (probably in all the wrong places!) if your tension isn't really tight!

Besides downloads from the  Vintage Visage website, we also sell the patterns printed on lovely thick ivory coloured paper and sealed in a clear cello envelope from our Ebay store- it does cost more than the automatic download but they are perfect to give a little gifts and these patterns in particular should raise a smile from those who recive them!
